Luxury Tours Ireland Attractions
There are many attractions in Ireland that are internationally renowned, such as the Cliffs of Moher, The Jameson’s Whiskey Distillery Midelton, the Lakes of Killarney, the Ring of Kerry, Bunratty Folk Park ….the list goes on, and you can see them all at our Discover Ireland Tour Page. But today I would like to briefly focus on something a bit different.
Private Tours Ireland & Attractions in Limerick
Right here in our home town of Limerick, the City is getting ready for its new status as 2014 European Capital of Culture. This is a strong vote of confidence in Limerick, Ireland’s 3rd largest city, as a destination with an interesting and surprising variety of offerings to tourists. Limerick was also European City of Sport in 2011. Limerick captures the essence of both the tranquil pace of the Irish countryside in Adare, Ireland’s prettiest village, and of course all the trappings and attractions you would expect of a modern City such as high street shopping and live music 7 nights a week in acclaimed pubs and venues.
The recently refurbished Limerick City Gallery of Art is a real treat. Located in the Georgian quarter of the City and nestled into the delightful Peoples Park which itself has its own curious history, this well appointed gallery houses a quality café/restaurant and has both permanent collection items as well as feature displays and collections making both older and modern creations freely available to the public. Important pieces by Sean Keating, Paul Henry and contemporary local Irish artist John Shinnors are part of the permanent collection. The gallery features as #9 on www.irishcentral.coms top ten 2013 tourist attractions for Ireland, and we think justifiably so.
The Hunt Museum is a significant and large private collection of curious items from the Neolithic period right up to the 20th Century and is a must if your Ireland Vacation or tour includes browsing the streets of the Lady City. Free to enter on Sunday’s, or for a small entrance fee otherwise, the Hunt Museum is another Georgian Architectural master piece in Limerick City’s crown. Enjoy a relaxed browse of the three floors which overlook the bustling city below on one side, and the flowing Shannon river on the other side of this magnificent building. There is a quality gift shop and a seriously good café/restaurant on the ground and basement floors. Knowledgeable and friendly tour guides are conveniently available and will walk the floors with you explaining the many artefacts, untensils, tools, weaponry, religious curios and so much more on display from hundreds and thousands of years ago.
From a sporting perspective we highly recommend a visit to Thomond Park. Limerick has many sporting stadia and Thomond Park is the spiritual home of Irish Rugby. The US Eagles played Australia here in the Rugby World Cup of 1999 when Ireland was joint host nation! Today the stadium is home to Twice European Champions Munster. The stadium was redeveloped in 2008 and apart from being one of Ireland’s best loved sports arenas, it has a rugby museum that is fascinating and takes you back down memory lane to Munster’s astonishing performances against the great Southern Hemisphere Nations. Immerse yourself in the history of the game that has for a hundred years been the very heartbeat of Limerick, and through the recent exploits of the Munster Team in European competition has become the focus of Irish sporting passion. You can enjoy both the ‘Muster Experience Museum’ and the ‘Fully Guided Stadium Tour’.
