The Royal Golf Club Dublin is 131 years old, making it the second oldest Golf Club in Ireland. The golf links cover 65 hectares of land and is uniquely on an island (Bull Island). It is a spectacular place to golf and can be accessed via the causeway or the famous wooden bridge. The rebuild and design of the links (by the famous Harry Colt) is very traditional and the redesign in the 1990’s by Martin Hawtree ensured that Colt’s original design was respected while upgrading. Providing a more challenging links for golfers. This classic 18 hole links course is one of the most distinguished in Ireland. Famed for frequent visitors such as Christy O’ Connor, Pádraig Harrington and many more golf ‘royalty’.
Designed in 1890, the Island Golf Club was one of the 12 first Golf Clubs to be founded in Ireland and is the third oldest in Dublin. It is an island and is surrounded by striking scenery, Donabate beach, Broadmeadow Estuary and the Irish sea. This spectacular Golf Club has made a priority of protecting its’ heritage and beautiful nature around it. In 2015 it was ranked as number 13 in Golf Digest Ireland’s top 100 courses in Ireland. In the past you could only reach the island by boat but now you can have a private Irish driver take you directly to the course in luxury and style.
As one of the most enjoyable links in Ireland, the Baltray (Co. Louth Golf Club) is laid out on 190 acres in two loops, it is between the Boyne river and the Irish sea. The Club traditionally hosts some National and International events for both professional and amateur golfers (3 Irish Open in 2009 and Nissan Irish Open 2004). Designed by Tom Simpson, the loops on the course (each 9 holes) wind through the natural sand dunes and, along with a number of teeing areas, provide a tough challenge for even the most skilled of golfers. There is also a full practise area to warm up before-hand.
Pat Ruddy wished to create a challenging and modern links, while continuing to improve them through the years, and so the European Golf Club was designed. Spread over 7,000 acres there are views of the Irish sea on almost every hole. The infamous 7th hole is considered one of the best par 4’s in the world, there are also many other signature holes on this course. The incredible sand dunes create an impressive part of the links and the beach is so close that it’s not unusual to lose sight of your ball there!
As it’s designed for a thrilling game, it is said if you can play exceptionally at the European Golf Club then you can play anywhere! This challenge has been accepted by many famous faces of the golfing world: Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Padraig Harrington. It continues to attract the ‘best of the best’ but also aims to provide the ‘normal’ golfer with an enjoyable round. With it’s twists and quirks, it is a must that you take on this unique golf course.
The Heritage Golf Resort is a spectacular sight with the majestic Slieve Bloom Mountains towering in the background, this luxurious Golf Resort can be found in Co. Laois. The golf course is a 72 par championship course and was opened in 2004. The designers Seve Ballesteros and Jeff Howes are legendary and nature can be seen everywhere on this extraordinary course. There are 5 lakes, a stream and 7,000 trees on this beautiful golf resort. Even the tee shots on this course can prove a challenge and this is even before you can get to the green.
The K Club was designed by, the notable, Arnold Palmer and hosted the Ryder Cup in 2006. However, it’s recent claim is hosting the Irish Open this year, 2016. Which was won by the famous Rory McIlroy. This prestigious Golf Club has two golf courses: the Palmer Ryder Cup Course and The Smurfit Course.
Found in Co. Kildare, this hotel and country golf club was the third design by Palmer and is the venue for the European Open Championship every July. Resting on 550 acres the Golf Course has countless man-made lakes throughout and is apparent in holes 15th to 18th in which water comes in to play!
Portmarnock Golf Club opened in 1894 with just 9 holes, it was later extended to an 18- hole course in 1896 and then a further 9 holes joined the course in 1971. This distinguished course, designed by Bernhard Langer, is 117 years old.
Portmarnock is thought to be the best Championship Course in Ireland and was ranked by Golf Digest and the best Golf Club in Ireland. Portmarnock was also the venue for the first Irish Open in 1927. Upon his visit there Tom Watson’s view on Portmarnock was” There are no tricks or nasty surprises, only an honest, albeit searching test of shot making skills.” Portmarnock was also the venue for the first Irish Open in 1927.
Killeen Castle is a signature course created by Jack Niklaus. It is so impressive that it was named host venue for the 2011 Solheim Cup before the course was even completed! It stretches over 350 acres of land and upon its’ completion the course described by Niklaus as “truly one of our finest ever creations.” Also in place is David Peltz course with his very own seminars and teaching facilities, which have proven to be extremely popular. Offering golfers a change to learn new skills, or just perfect the ones they have. The proven success of this golf course is it provides for every level of player from beginner, to amateur, to pro.
