Aillwee Caves are remotely located in the heart of the Burren and is one of the oldest caves in Ireland. Opened in 2008 the Birds of Prey Sanctuary at Ailwee Cave is an impressive addition. Allow yourself to be entertained by the flying exhibitions of some of the world’s most beautiful eagles, falcons, hawks, and owls. Limerick also presents the 12th century St Mary’s Cathedral also known as Limerick Cathedral. The cathedral belongs to the Church of Ireland and is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1168, in accordance with tradition, the last King of Munster, Domnall Mòr Ua Briain, founded the cathedral on the site of his palace on Kings Island. It is the oldest building in Limerick still in use and houses the only set of misericords in Ireland.
The Hunt Museum is of historical and state importance as it is the building where a comprehensive private compilation of artefacts delegated to the state are housed. The Museum was established to house John & Gertrude Hunt’s global collection of over 2000 works of art and antiquities. The Hunt Museum Trust was established in 1974 to store the above properties on behalf of the people of Ireland but it wasn’t until 1997 that the museum was officially opened.
