Kenmare is a small town situated in one of Ireland’s most beautiful counties; Kerry. The Irish name for Kenmare is ‘An Neidín’ meaning ‘the little nest’ which is quite an appropriate name for the gorgeous town as it is nestled on the seashore at the foot of the Cork and Kerry mountains.
Kenmare is positioned at the crown of Kenmare Bay near the Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Mangerton and Caha mountains, which makes it an idyllic hill-walking destination. In 1656, Oliver Cromwell granted the town to an English Scientist call Sir William Petty as payment for completing the mapping of Ireland.
Interestingly, one of the largest Bronze Age (2200-500 B.C.) stone circles in south-west Ireland is a stone-throw away from Kenmare. Its amazing construction consists of 15 stones, circling a boulder dolmen.
